This month's find: a cast iron skillet
Cast iron is nearly indestructible, and thrift stores often sell it for a few dollars. Rust on the surface scrubs off and the pan can be re-seasoned. Walk away from cracks or warping: set it on a flat surface and check that it doesn't rock.

How to check it
Look at the bottom in good light for hairline cracks, and press on opposite edges to check it sits flat.
